Jay, Founder of Far Far Away

Tell me a little about yourself and how you got started.

I started creating unique products to use in my own rental cottages. When guests started asking where they could buy them I turned them into a product line.

What sets your business apart from others alike?

We hand print our own products and no one else in Nova Scotia can screen print a surface area this large.

Out of all your products, which one is your personal favorite, and why?

They’re all my favourite. But the Maritime Slang phrases towel might be in the lead because I’ve sold more of that one than any of the others. That towel can literally be found around the world from Australia to Japan and everywhere in between.

If you could jump back in time to when you first started your business, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Go for it!

Were there ever any times when you wanted to throw in the towel and call it quits? How did you deal with it?

I make towels... I don’t throw them. ha. No, I have never wanted to quit. I love what I do…  even if I won the lotto, I’d still be doing what I love.

How do you spend your time when you’re not creating?

I own 5 small businesses… there is no time when I’m not creating or working. I wish there was time when I wasn’t creating. Ha.

What are some of your favorite things about the town or city you live in?

I grew up here. I spent 10 years away and came back. I will die here. I don’t want to live anywhere else. I have a house and a yard on the ocean. I hermit away as much as I can.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Fly. Because it would be cool.

If you weren’t a maker, what would you be doing?

Probably selling things for other makers. Or running any one of my other businesses.
